It’s been an amazing day for 1st Abram Cubs, as our Young People experienced Amateur Radio for the first time.  Making contacts via VHF (2m) and DMR (Digital Mode Radio), they learned the basic science behind amateur radio and got to see something that ‘just works’.

With the hut garden resembling a mini Winter Hill, and becoming out of bounds, for safety, Cubs got the opportunity not only to hear people from around the world, but also to press the Push To Talk Button and speak to them!

All 15 Cubs had the opportunity to speak, though not all did.  Luckily a team of Cubs who not only tried it, but blew people away with their confidence and subsequently told us that they would like to explore the hobby further!  Imagine, talking to people around the world on a £30 radio!  These small team became Akela’s ‘Radio Dream Team’

After time on the radio, our Cubs then took to the Internet to try JOTI!

Great fun was had by all as they talked to other Scouts and Guides from around the world and filled our paper map with pins!

And so as we wrap up another JOTI we turn to trying to remember how, in our last residential experience in 2019, we were EVER able to get them to sleep, we bid all of our parents, and new friends from around the world ‘73’, and good night!

The team at 1st Abram would like to thank South Lancs Amateur Radio Club for taking the time out of their day to make this event happen!
